Panelwalks' Top 5
A GUTTMANHOZ
KŐBÁNYA ÚJHEGY ESTATE
A slice of the Czech Republic on the outskirts of the 10th district. The Újhegyi Quarry Lake is not only one of the most charming spots in the multifaceted Kőbánya, but it's also home to a pub offering the most monumental panel view in the city. From the terrace of 'A Guttmanhoz,' built into the hillside, the horizon is framed by the orderly, yet spaciously lined, panel buildings of the Újhegy housing estate. The tranquility, the compact wooden cabin, the shaded terrace with its wooden railings, the anglers, and the perfectly poured Postřižinské and Černá Hora  beers bring the atmosphere of well-off Czech provincial town hospodas to this Pest suburbian environment.
Notable panel sights around: The wide promenade cutting through the center of the housing estate, bordered by service buildings, the Újhegy Promenade, was completely (and beautifully) renovated a few years ago. Its landscape architecture solutions even won an architectural excellence award.
ROCKY SÖRÖZŐ
ÚJPALOTA ESTATE
As the number of pubs continues to decline, their function as community spaces is also gradually disappearing. Perhaps it’s the coziness of the small wooden structure of Rocky that still brings people together so well; in any case, there are few places in Budapest today where I’ve encountered such a strong regulars’ vibe. Entering this harmonious scene as an outsider always creates a slight disruption, but a true 'panel hunter' wouldn't stay inside (which, by the way, is perfectly air-conditioned in summer), preferring instead to absorb the genius loci on the terrace or while leaning against the side of the neighboring building, surrounded by the beautiful houses on Páskomliget utca. Achtung! Rocky can only be visited during the Market Hall's opening hours.
Notable panel sights around: Watertower House, Market Hall, beautiful blocks in orginal condition along Páskomliget utca, Centennial Monument
ZÖLDPONT PIZZÉRIA
ÚJPALOTA ESTATE
Clinging to the side of the beautiful, well-preserved tower block on Páskomliget Street, the Zöldpont Pizzéria hides behind its Bierstube exterior the most popular venue on the housing estate. It's a restaurant and bar, a spot for birthdays and dates, but perhaps most importantly, Zöldpont is always a reliable option. Unfortunately, few places have survived in the housing estate, and it’s particularly hard to find anything open late in the afternoon or on weekends. The suburban authenticity is paired with a good food selection, and through the brown tassel curtains, you can enjoy the view of the Water Tower and the Market Hall. Plus, the terrace is open when the weather is nice. Could there be a stronger #plattenbauromantik value proposition? Bonus points (green?) for the menu illustrated with the best Újpalota-themed Fortepan photos.

RIZMAJER SÖRHÁZ CSEPEL
CSEPEL-CENTER ESTATE
Anyone who sought something more exciting than Monde Selection-award-winning commercial beers (and Mister beer) in 2000s Budapest is likely to have encountered Rizmajer beer from Csepel. Initially, you could only try its draft version at the brewery's cult pub in Csepel. Although the company has since outgrown 'Island Country' (as some local patriots tend to refer to Csepel) the most authentic source, the urquell, remains the Sörház on the edge of the Csepel-Center estate. With its spacious interior, cellar, and surprisingly pleasant garden area, Sörház provides a setting for a diverse clientele, where local regulars mingle with ambitious young pub-goers and cyclists heading towards the southern parts of Csepel Island. For a detailed selection of beers and food, it's worth checking out their website.
Notable panel sights around: Csepel Watertower, Csepel-Center estate's blocks. A little further away: Elephants statues, Csepel Works
ÁRKÁD KÁVÉZÓ
ÓBUDA ESTATE
It would be a cheap joke to start by saying that a dense hedge of Árkád-line shields (referring to the Árpád line, a WW2 fortification system, pun intended) and protects this sunken ground-floor spot from the street noise. The ambiance of this venue, reminiscent of a Nagykörút (Grand Boulevard) pub, is defined by its cozy terrace wrapping around the corner and its strong sports character, highlighted by jerseys, flags, and Nemzeti Sport article clippings covering the walls and ceiling. Árkád is a first-class spot for any important sporting event, whether it's a meditative afternoon watching the Olympics or a collective outburst of swearing during a national football team's match. It also makes for a perfect refreshment stop during a bike ride from the city center to the Római-part or Szentendre, as the bike path runs just a corner away. You can also order a melegszendvics ('warm sandwich') to accompany your drinks.
Notable panel sights around: Original-condition prefab blocks in the surrounding area; 16-story tower blocks made with precast concrete technology at the intersection of Szentendrei and Bogdáni út. The 'Village House', Hungary's longest prefab block (unfortunately renovated), as well as, largest residential house (3000 residents). Address: Szőlő u. 66–94., 1032 Budapest
